Catastrophic Injuries

Some injuries are so severe that a full recovery is not possible and the victim and the victim’s family are forced to live with the injury. This can be the case with severe traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, severe and disfiguring burn injuries, multiple fractures, or neurological trauma. These types of serious injuries may leave you no choice but to seek legal help.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Human Brain - suggests catastrophic brain injury

TBI due to closed head trauma can occur whenever a brain is injured as a result of sudden trauma. Individuals suffering traumatic brain injuries following an accident may exhibit a number of telltale symptoms, such as memory loss, mood swings, forgetfulness, a lack of coordination, chronic headaches, speech or language problems, loss or change of sensation (i.e., smelling, sight, touch, hearing), inability to pay attention, loss of movement in portions of a body, and/or loss of consciousness. Severe cases of TBI may cause the victim to slip into a coma or a persistent vegetative state, where the person loses consciousness for extended periods.

A closed head injury can occur in a variety of situations where the head moves at violent speeds, even when the head is not struck. Most TBI cases are due to one of two causes: falls (usually involving children or elderly individuals) or car accidents, including cases where pedestrians and bicyclists are struck by motor vehicles.

Even cases of mild TBI — commonly diagnosed as a concussion — can have severe and lasting consequences. According to the Federal Government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “[e]arly MTBI symptoms may appear mild, but they can lead to significant, life-long impairment in an individual’s ability to function physically, cognitively, and psychologically.”1 Given the high stakes involved even when just a mild case of TBI has been diagnosed, it is essential that you are aware of all of your legal rights.

Spinal Cord Injuries

Human Spine - suggests spinal cord injury

One of the most common causes of spinal cord injuries is motor vehicle accidents. Spine injuries can be among the most devastating and difficult injuries to deal with due to the impact such injuries have not only on the victim, but on the victim’s family. This is also true for spine injuries such as herniated disks or bulging disks, which can forever alter one’s range of motion and ability to enjoy life activities. Because the spinal cord transmits brain activity to the rest of the body, a serious injury to a spinal cord can result in partial or full paralysis, or loss of certain body functions. When these injuries occur, lives are changed, and the road to recovery is a difficult and painful one.
